Songs from Vienna

Exclusive concert (in cooperation with RKF Prague)

Date and time:

Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 6 p.m.

Venue:

Hall of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Prague

Jungmannovo nám. 18, Praha 1

Program

Alma Schindler-Mahler, Alexander Zemlinsky, Arnold Schönberg, Viktor Ullmann, Egon Wellesz, Erich Zeisl

Performers

  • KS Adrian Eröd (Austria) – baritone
  • Christoph Traxler (Austria) – piano

This truly exclusive concert, not only in terms of its scope but also its program and performers, could be subtitled Arnold Schönberg and his “family.” Zemlinsky was Schönberg’s brother-in-law, Alma Schindler (later married three times to Mahler, Gropius, and Werfel) was not only his student but also Zemlinsky’s great love (he introduced her to Schönberg, but Schönberg resisted the charms of this femme fatale). And Ullmann, Wellesz, and Zeisl were all direct students of the Viennese master. Through the songs performed – masterful poetic and musical miniatures – concertgoers will be able to – fully immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of musical Vienna at the beginning and in the first decades of the 20th century, which was unparalleled in the artistic world at the time, but was violently interrupted in 1938 by the Anschluss of Austria. In particular, the songs of Alma Schindler, of which only fifteen have survived (after her marriage to Gustav Mahler, she gave up her composing career at his insistence), will certainly be a great discovery for the Czech audience! And the star performers are also a guarantee of an extraordinary experience.

Thanks to the generous support of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Prague, a long-standing partner of our festival, we are able to offer FREE ADMISSION to this concert. However, due to limited capacity, we kindly ask you to make a reservation in advance at: prag-kf@bmeia.gv.at).

About performers

Adrian Eröd – baritone

is an internationally renowned Austrian baritone, a pupil of the famous Walter Berry. A long-time soloist at the Vienna State Opera, he was awarded Austria’s highest musical title, Kammersänger (KS, Chamber Singer), in 2017. He has performed a number of leading roles in the baritone repertoire on his home stage, with Beckmesser in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg becoming his signature role (he later performed this character in Bayreuth as well). He has also performed at La Scala in Milan and on other stages around the world. Eröd is also intensely involved in song composition, especially from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
